Superbloom

Superbloom

28” x 23” mixed media on canvas

2023

This painting was created through a process of working on both sides of the canvas simultaneously. I had noticed that the way I saturate the canvas in my paintings leaves an interesting bleed on the back of the piece. I wanted to use that as a way of working intentionally & play with it as a new level of depth. See the process below.

A ‘superbloom’ is defined as a rare desert botanical phenomenon in California and Arizona in which an unusually high proportion of wildflowers whose seeds have lain dormant in desert soil germinate and blossom at roughly the same time. The title ‘Superbloom’ felt fitting for this piece as it is highly pigmented & the canvas is saturated the same way the soil would be to create a real superbloom.
